M. S. Subbulakshmi (1916–2004) was an Indian Carnatic singer and classical musician, hailed as the "Queen of Carnatic Music." She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor. Subbulakshmi was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, to Shanmukavadiver Ammal and Subramania Iyer. As a child, she started singing Carnatic music and was soon recognized as a great talent. She began her professional career as a singer in 1936 and soon became a star in the Carnatic music scene. Her singing style was unique, combining traditional Carnatic music with a modern touch. She has performed in numerous concerts, many of which have been recorded and released as albums. Subbulakshmi has won numerous awards throughout her career, including the Padma Bhushan, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Kalidas Samman, the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the Bharat Ratna. She passed away in 2004, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable Carnatic music.
